The garden reconstructs the streets of Song-dynasty Bianjing and the traffic of the Bian canal as depicted in Zhang Zeduan's scroll Along the River During the Qingming Festival. Covering more than 540 mu, with 150 mu of water, over 400 reconstructed buildings and more than 30,000 m² of classical garden structures, it forms the largest Song-culture architectural group in the central plain. The Shangshan Gate and Rainbow Bridge, given prominence in the painting, are among its set pieces.

What to see
Rainbow Bridge
A major innovation in the history of Chinese bridge engineering and counted among China's ten famous historic bridges. It arches across the park's Bian river and is built for two levels of traffic: pedestrians and horses above, freight and boats below.
Lakeside halls
The linked Xuanhe and Xuande halls, joined to the water pavilion to form an imperial playhouse. The position gives the clearest layered view of the gardens and the best vantage point for performances on the water.
Shangshan Gate and the bronze relief
The Shangshan Gate is the city gate shown in the scroll, rebuilt to that form; the park also holds a bronze relief rendering of the painting itself.

A 1:1 reconstruction of the Bianjing street market and canal traffic depicted in Zhang Zeduan's Northern Song scroll Along the River During the Qingming Festival. The park is built around live performance rather than exhibits, and is the most direct way to picture Song urban life. It is entirely flat, which matters for visitors with limited mobility.
What to see
- The evening water-borne production on the Bian river lake — the reason to come, and ticketed separately.
- Daytime folk performance on a rolling schedule: the welcome of Judge Bao, canal traffic, cockfighting, cuju. Collect the day's timetable at the gate.
- The Rainbow Bridge, the wooden arch bridge from the painting and the park's visual centre.
- Kaifeng Prefecture and Dragon Pavilion are both in the same part of the city and combine well on the same or the next day.
Practical notes
The park is walkable and flat, which makes it suitable during post-operative recovery or for visitors with limited stamina — relevant when planning a medical trip. Summer days are hot: enter in the afternoon and stay for the evening show, then return to Zhengzhou or overnight in Kaifeng. Show and entry tickets are separate; book ahead in high season.
